This summer I went back to Comarca el Limonal a very rural small town about 3 hours away from Managua. I had to get up at 5 a.m., so I can be there in the morning. In Nicaragua my days are very long because I work nonstop 12 to 15 hours a day. After I am done working with the children, I come back to Managua in the evening and I continue to work. I always have to exchange clothes for the correct size, and I have to make new bags for other kids, so no one is left behind. I always think I have all the kids, but there are always new kids that appear and are not on the list. A lot of these indigenous children were abandoned and don’t have parents. The older ones look after the younger ones. Getting there was a big challenge because there is only one dirt road to get there. When it rains a lot the road goes underwater and it disappears. When I was working in Comarca el Limonal it rained every day, but the weather did not stop us from doing our activities. Under the rain we played, had lunch, broke the piñata and did fun activities. These kids sleep in hammocks or on the dirt floor, and when it rains they get wet. They don’t have water, electricity and they don’t go to school. When I go to Nicaragua I bring them a piñata and lot’s of candy to celebrate all the birthdays. I always bring them clothes, food, candy and a big piñata. This is one of the poorest and most rural place I have ever seen. I love spending time with these kids. I can’t wait to go back.
